What is abstract realism, exactly?
Abstract realism takes two things that used to sit on opposite ends of the art world and puts them in the same painting. Realism is about accuracy: the way light falls on skin, the true shape of a face, the detail you'd recognise instantly. Abstraction is about feeling: colour that runs hotter than real life, edges that dissolve, brushwork that moves with emotion instead of anatomy.
Put them together and you get a portrait that's still unmistakably a portrait, but one that also carries mood, memory and movement in a way a purely realistic painting never could. A woman's face stays a face. But the background might bloom into colour that has nothing to do with the room she's standing in, because it has everything to do with what she's feeling in that moment.
It's not a new idea. Painters have been quietly working in this space for over a century, letting a stormy sky or a soft expression blur into something less literal and more felt. What's changed is how it's being used now: to tell very personal, very modern stories about identity, womanhood and the parts of ourselves we don't always show.
How I blend realism and abstraction in my portraits
Every painting I make starts the same way: with a real woman, or a real feeling I'm trying to capture. I build the portrait with enough realism that you know exactly who or what you're looking at. The eyes, the expression, the presence, all grounded and true.
Then I let it go. Mixed media gives me the freedom to layer in gold leaf, loose acrylic, oil, texture and colour that has nothing to do with realism and everything to do with emotion. A dragonfly might drift across a face that's otherwise perfectly rendered. A background might dissolve into colour that says more about strength or grief or joy than any literal detail ever could.
That's the whole idea behind my work. I'm not trying to paint a woman exactly as a camera would see her. I'm trying to paint what she's carrying. Realism gives the work its anchor. Abstraction gives it its voice.
